چکیده
Infrared (IR) optical fibers may be defined as fiber optics transmitting radiation with wavelengths greater than approximately 2 μm. The first IR fibers were fabricated in the mid-1960’s from chalcogenide glasses such as arsenic trisulfide with losses in excess of 10 dB/m. During the mid-1970’s, the interest in developing an efficient and reliable IR fiber for short-haul applications increased partly in response to the need for a fiber to link broadband, long wavelength radiation to remote photodetectors in military sensor applications. In addition, there was an everincreasing need for a flexible fiber delivery system for transmitting CO2 laser radiation in surgical applications. Around 1975, a variety of IR materials and fibers were developed to meet these needs. These included the heavy metal fluoride glass (HMFG) and polycrystalline fibers as well as hollow rectangular waveguides. While none of these fibers had physical properties even approaching that of conventional silica fibers, they were, nevertheless, useful in lengths less than 2 to 3 m for a variety of IR sensor and power delivery applications.

We describe the development and testing of hollow core glass waveguides (i.e., fiber optics) for use in Mid-Wave Infrared (MWIR) and Long-Wave Infrared (LWIR) spectroscopy systems. Spectroscopy measurements in these wavelength regions (i.e., from 3 to 14 μm) are useful for detecting trace chemical compounds for a variety of security and defense related applications, and fiber optics are a key e...
متن کامل2-10 μm Mid-infrared Supercontinuum Generation in As2Se3 Photonic Crystal Fiber
For the first time, we demonstrated that a hyper-broadband from 2μm to 10μm can be generated with a high spectral flatness by using a ~4 um pump and an As2Se3 photonic crystal fiber. The broad and flat dispersion profile and the low guiding loss of the endlessly single-mode As2Se3 photonic crystal fibers combining with the high nonlinearity and wide mid-infrared transparent window of As2Se3 cha...
متن کاملMid-infrared nonlinear absorption in As2S3 chalcogenide glass
We report mid-infrared (MIR) nonlinear absorption in As2S3 glasses which results from two-photon excitation of valence electron to the Urbach extension followed by strong linear absorption of excited states. The measured MIR nonlinear absorption can be 3 to 4 orders of magnitude stronger than the two-photon absorption in the near-infrared for similar laser intensities and does not result from c...
متن کاملGlass-clad single-crystal germanium optical fiber.
Long lengths (250 meters) of a flexible 150 microm diameter glass-clad optical fiber containing a 15 microm diameter crystalline and phase-pure germanium core was fabricated using conventional optical fiber draw techniques. X-ray diffraction and spontaneous Raman scattering measurements showed the core to be very highly crystalline germanium with no observed secondary phases. Elemental analysis...
متن کاملHigh-spectral-flatness mid-infrared supercontinuum generated from a Tm-doped fiber amplifier.
Broadband mid-infrared supercontinuum pulses were generated directly from a short piece of active fiber in a single-mode Tm-doped fiber amplifier. The broadband mid-infrared pulses have an extremely high spectral flatness with ~600 nm FWHM bandwidth (from 1.9 μm to 2.5 μm), >15 kW peak power, and >20 GW/cm(2) laser peak intensity. This new approach exhibits a significantly different physical me...
